9 Changes to Make to Your Shoes to Relieve Sciatica Pain

shoes for back pain

Back pain, including sciatica pain, can develop from the feet up--that’s why supportive shoes are so important. Non-supportive, ill-fitting shoes can cause changes to your gait. When your feet and legs adjust their movements to compensate for shoe and foot problems, your pelvis may tilt forward, for example. This increases the curvature of the spine, placing excess pressure on the lower back and the sciatic nerve.

Orland Parks doctor of Physical Therapy Amy Harmening joins Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman on WCIU’s You and Me This Morning to discuss the do’s and don’ts of women’s shoes. The feet are the foundation of your body so you want to make sure you have adequate support. If you don’t support your feet then you are going to have long term effects in the future whether it is ankle pain, hip pain, knee pain or back pain.  A lot of the time when women wear a heel they are upright which is causing more stress on your back that you want to avoid.

Feet are the foundation of the body. If you walk improperly and wear the wrong shoes, your body must work harder to keep your whole body even, putting extra weight on your knees, hips and lower back. The right pair of shoes can promote good balance and posture while walking or exercising. There is not a specific brand of shoes that supports back pain but before purchasing a shoe there are a few things you should consider if you suffer from back pain

Shoes For Back Pain Relief

shoes for lower back painSummer is here and it is time to pull out the flip-flops again. A bad pair of flat flip-flops can lead to back pain symptoms, choose a sandal that supports your arch and keeps your foot stable with support around your heel and the front of your foot. When wearing flip-flops, you tend to alter your gait, taking shorter steps, which can lead to pain in other areas of the body.

Should you stop wearing flip-flops? It depends on what you are doing in those flip-flops. If you are going someplace where you won’t be doing a lot of walking, flip-flops are fine. However, if you will be doing a lot of walking or even standing for longer periods of time, footwear with more stability is a better choice. Everything in moderation!
